Yael & the bags - The Lions of Judah and Persia

The Lion of Judah and the Lion of Persia – Israel and the Iranian people, united by love and shared values. We both know how devastating Islamism is, in all its forms.

We Jews feel a strong affinity with the Iranian people. Unlike most other Muslim countries, the Iranian people do not want to live under Islamist oppression. They have shown real courage in taking to the streets and protesting. They are being massacred, and we are all waiting, and have been waiting for quite some time now, for the regime to finally fall.

Iranians (and by that I mean the majority who want freedom) have clearly shown their support for Israel, and we are perhaps the only ones who truly understand what they are going through.

What happens in Iran affects the entire region and, to a very large extent, Israel, as all terrorist groups in the region are financed and backed by the Iranian regime. When the regime falls, the entire region will change for the better.

So I sat there one evening, feeling hopeless and despairing, and at the same time wanting to express the deep love and solidarity I feel for the Iranian people. And in my head, images began to appear of how this solidarity could be shown with embroidery. I sketched and thought about symbols until the lions, which we have in common, appeared. Lions represent, among other things, strength and courage. Both the Israeli and Iranian people have shown incredible, real courage. A courage that most people in the West cannot understand or relate to.

The Lion of the Tribe of Judah and the Lion of Persia – Israel and the Iranian people, united by love and shared values. We both know how devastating Islamism is, in all its forms.

As I sat embroidering, which took maybe 10 hours in total, I felt calm and hope returning. The embroidery gave me a strong sense that we stand united, that it is incredibly difficult right now but that things will soon get better.

I posted the embroidery on Instagram and was overwhelmed by all the love and expressions of community I received from so many Iranians. It confirmed how much we are in this together, how our struggle for survival is the same and how much we understand each other. It turned out that it gave hope to many more than just me.

If you want to feel hope and joy, just go to the comments section and read. Sure, there were some hateful comments too, which I removed, but most of them were from bots and Arab Islamists who shun our unity like the plague.

I also noticed how I tensed up every time I got a comment from someone who isn't a follower or someone who comments regularly. How accustomed I am to insults and hatred that a comment from a stranger makes me instinctively brace for impact. And how surprising and unusual it feels to see that it is love, support and respect from Iranians all over the world who appreciate that we, Jews and Israelis, support them so much with all our hearts. That our struggle is the same struggle against the same ideology of oppression and hatred. The people of Israel and Iran are in this together. We love you and pray for your freedom!

When the Iranian people are finally free, our two nations will flourish together and spread even more light in the world. Be ezrat Hashem – (with God's help, as we say in Hebrew) may it happen soon.

Hand stitched pieces about the Jewish holidays

A series of hand stitched pieces about the Jewish holidays that reflect my thoughts and my emotional connection to them. Jewish textile art Before oct 7th I started a project where I would stitch small pieces for every Jewish holiday. They are made of intuitive stitching, where perfection has no place and where inner thought and emotions get the front seat. Images that use scrap pieces of fabric and thread are stitched together by hand. I started with Succot and then just about managed to...

Jewish textile art As a textile artisan, maker and creative person, who likes to be in creative spaces both in real life and online, the last two years have been, in these circles, a darkness of antisemitism disguised as "criticism of Israel". I have left virtually all of these places, both physical and digital, and now spend my time almost exclusively in Jewish contexts. We Jews are a tiny minority. In Sweden, where I live, and in the world, and consequently, the Jewish textile craft world...
